Light smoke, or light tint visors are good for sunny early in the morning, late in the afternoon, or any other time where the sun is out, but isn’t super bright.
Dark smoke, or dark tint visors are good for the middle of the day, whenever you would normally wear sunglasses.
Sometimes available in red, green, orange, purple or pink (depending on the helmet brand and model), iridium visors are like a dark smoke visor, but with a reflective finish. The reflective finish helps reduce glare from the sun whilst riding.
A tip when cleaning these visors. If you get bugs on them whilst riding, don’t wipe them off straight away! You cold scratch the mirror finish. Wait until they are dry and lightly chip them off with your fingernail or use a clean rag and some soapy water and gently remove. Your visor will be as good as new!
Yellow visors are great for low light conditions such as dusk, fog and rain. Yellow visors are all about contrast enhancement, so things list potholes will be easier to see in the low light conditions. The world will have a yellow tinge to it, but most riders say they get used to it relatively quickly.
Photochromatic visors are the most expensive visor out there but are well worth it. These visors react to sunlight and lighten or darken based on the amount of sunlight hitting the visor.
It usually takes about 30-40 seconds to go from completely transparent to dark tint.
